Gun law is a polarizing issue in America thanks to continuous politicization and increased contradicting public opinion. Tragic mass shootings have also increased the pressure on the government to reevaluate the issue of gun laws. This essay is an analysis of America's gun laws through my perspective on the issue.
My opinion on firearm legalization is that the United States requires massive reforms to be at par with other heavily weaponized nations. Gun violence's impact on American society is undeniable, considering more than 7,500 Americans have died this year. There is the feeling that the free world countries are watching the deterioration of America's democracy. A strong and principled America is what the country is built upon and why it became an attraction to the world. Gun law reforms are the first step to hopeful bipartisan support that will help protect the citizens.
One of the pros of gun reforms is the reeducation of access to deadly weapons. Stricter gun laws can reduce suicide rates as research shows many people in the United States use guns as they preferred suicide to all others combined. According to the Harvard Injury Control Research Center (HICRC), gun suicides were 19,392 in 2010 alone, while other methods claimed 11,078 lives combined.
Increased gun ownership increases the possibility of the weapon falling into the wrong hands. Gun laws reduce access to such weapons by ensuring that children or the mentally ill don't have access to firearms. Mass shootings in the United States have a common theme of perpetrators having access to weapons that should not be in their hands. For instance, an Islamic terrorist couple enacted a mass shooting (terrorist attack) in San Bernardino, California, where they shot and killed 14 people and left 21 others injured CITATION MYV21 \l 1033 (MYVENN, 2021). If access to weapons is restricted, such instances can become less and easier to control, consequently saving lives. Research shows that access to weapons affects the basic unit of society which is the family. There is evidence showing that the presence of a firearm increases the chances of a family member dying a violent death.
