The amendments of the American constitution play an important role in ensuring that Americans' civil liberties and rights are protected (U.S. Government, U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Congress, 2017). However, there have always been areas of contention regarding the amendments, and the courts have been called upon to interpret these amendments on many occasions. Making some of them specific would eliminate the contention.
I would make some modifications to the second Amendment. Currently, the second amendment states that "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (United States Senate, n.d.). It gives Americans the right to own firearms. However, gun control policies have often been limited by this amendment, yet gun violence has become rampant in recent years (Carison, 2020). There is a need to make changes to the second Amendment to facilitate effective gun control.
