This discussion explores William Wallace (Braveheart), a Scottish war hero who fought for the liberation of his people from the English crown in the thirteenth century. William Wallace (Braveheart) was a Scottish freedom fighter, famed for his leadership in the Battle of the Stirling Bridge in 1297, fighting for the independence of Scotland against England. He was born circa. 1270 and died in 1305. His family was landowners, with his father being a knight, a vassal, and a minor noble of James Stewart.
Some sources reveal that he was born in Elderslie, Paisley, and some intimate that he was born in Ayrshire. By his father being a knight, it is obvious that he was born into a noble family. Since his family refused to sign up to the role of tenants of Scottish origin-‘Ragman Rolls’- who pledged their loyalty to the king of England, William Wallace was considered an outlaw in the eyes of the crown.
Wallace’s road to heroism begins in the earlier periods when a succession quagmire came up after the King of Scotland, Alexander III, who reigned between 1249 and 1286, died, leaving behind no heir apparent, and even the would-be inheritor, his granddaughter, had died before ascending to the throne. The King of England at that time, Edward I, was called upon to mediate for the successor, choosing his stooge, John Balliol, whose weak kingdom reigned between 1292 and 1296.
The lack of charisma in the king led to a rebellion that saw the Scottish nobles switch allegiance to Robert Bruce.
