Civil Rights Movement – Martin Luther King. Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. is certainly the most popular civil rights activist in the US history. Born in 1929 to a Christian family, King Jr. led the greatest civil rights movement in the mid 20th century that saw him regarded as an iconic American and world leader (Ling, 2015). Before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, there were some developments to liberate black people from rampant social injustices such as slavery. However, discrimination in several other aspects persisted, and it led to the emergence of the civil rights movement. King Jr. played an important role in the events that preceded the enactment of the voting rights act and the civil rights act (Ling, 2015). The events of the civil rights movement that King Jr. participated in before his unfortunate assassination in 1968 include the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the foundation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the March on Washington that led to his famous phrase 'I have a dream'.
