The DASH diet is a lifelong healthy eating strategy aimed at preventing or treating hypertension. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. There are two versions of the diet: the standard diet, where the total sodium consumed in a day is restricted to 2,300 mg, and the Low Sodium diet, where the total sodium consumed is limited to 1,500 mg (Mayo Clinic). The diet plan stresses foods low in sodium and rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The DASH diet promotes the eating of dairy products with low-fat content, vegetables, and fruits, in addition to fish, whole grains, nuts, and poultry. It also allows limited servings of red meats, sugary beverages, and sweets. Those who should follow the DASH diet include high blood pressure, heart diseases, osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, and even cancer.
