In Christianity, a human person is believed to be made from the image and likeness of the supreme being governing us all, God. Human beings are considered as the highest and most loved; that is why we are the only ones given knowledge and free will amongst all of God’s creations. A human person is a living being capable of taking care of all the other creations, gaining and sharing knowledge, exercising free will, creating and destroying beauty, giving and receiving love, and many more. With that being said, a human being possesses inherent value and dignity. The dignity of a human being is the worthiness to receive honor and respect just the way a person is. A person’s worth is something permanent and innate. It does not need to be earned and cannot be taken away.
The theory of moral status that is most applicable to the Christian belief of what the nature of the human person is is the theory based on individual properties. This theory believes that in the fertilization stage of the human reproductive process, life already begins inside the womb, and at that moment, the embryo already has a full moral status. It is the same as well until adulthood. Theory-based on personal properties also exclusively states that all people have status, and this is exclusively for the human race (Code, 1949).
The events in the Case Study will question the teaching in Christianity of what the worth of a human being is: Fetal Abnormality, involving Jessica, Marco, Maria, Dr. Wilson, and the child inside Jessica’s womb. The scenario is about the couple, Jessica and Marco, who is expecting a child. After undergoing preliminary ultrasound to check the status of the baby inside the womb, they found out that the baby will have a 25% chance of having Down Syndrome in addition to the condition seen on ultrasound that the child did not develop any arms (Shelly & Miller, 2009). They are accompanied by Maria, their aunt, who, in the past, let them stay in her home while they did not have the money to get their apartment yet. Lastly, Dr. Wilson, the attending physician, is responsible for the examination of the baby and the status of Jessica’s pregnancy. He is also the one who informed Jessica of all the impressions found in the scan.
Each character in the story is using a theory of moral status, different depending on their circumstances and position. Dr. Wilson is a medical professional who emphasized his role as a physician. He is responsible for telling Jessica all the possible actions to take, including its advantages, disadvantages, and consequences. Dr. Wilson, in this perspective, is using theory based on relationships because of doing the things that are expected in a doctor-patient relationship. Aside from that, he is also using theory based on cognitive properties because of his rationality, cognition, and ability to communicate with words. In line with this, the theory used also believes that due to the child’s lack of level of awareness and rationality while inside the womb, it has no moral status yet (American Nurses Association, 2001).
