Multicultural communication is the ability to communicate with different people from different cultural groups and be in a position to deliver the information to the parties (Ponterotto, 2009). It equips one with the ability to interact and manage people of different cultures, locally, regionally, nationally and globally. This communication with different cultural groups originated from the development of urbanization, the desire to travel from one place to another in search of education, employment and the expansion of the trade organization. These demands have made multicultural communication possible.
Explain how cultural and religious differences affect the health care professional and the issues that can arise in cross-cultural communications
Health care and religious belief conflicts due to different beliefs. Different religious groups have different faiths such as some do not take certain medication; others do not seek healthcare profession from health professions for example (Parkin, 2009). While communicating with this different culture the individual taking the cross cultural issues should be well trained so as to ensure that they deliver the information to the parties without hurting anyone. They should ensure that they explain the benefits of the culture they hold and explain the benefits of upholding some culture and the need to neglect those that may not be beneficial to them. When administering health care to patients with different cultural belief, they should be treated with open minded and respect (Parkin, 2009)
Family culture and its effect on patient education
Families have cultures that try to explain the causes of illness, how it can be cured and those to be involved in the process. This affects the patient education as the procedure offered by the health care providers' may conflict with the cultural belief (Falvo, 2010). The family culture may hinder the patient from obtaining the education of health professionals and what they are taught they may not uphold it with confidence.
To help patients remember what they are taught
The health care provider should use visual devices such as videos to teach the patients as this form will be easy for patients to remember what they saw than what they heard over time. A healthcare professional should also give the patients DVDs, tapes and other written journals used to teach to help them refer what they learnt often as a constant reminder of their responsibilities (Falvo, 2010).
