GMOs, also called genetically modified organisms, are micro-organisms, animals, plants, or other organisms whose genetic makeup is modified transgenetic technology or genetic engineering in the laboratory (Robinson AW, 2016). Hence, a genetically modified organism has either one or more virus, bacterial, animal, or plant genes that do not occur through conventional crossbreeding methods or in nature. Hence, GMO foods are genetically engineered or modified foods produced from organisms whose DNA makeup is modified by introducing foreign genes using genetic engineering methods.
Essentially, GMOs are used in agriculture to reduce the cost of drug and food production, increase crop yield, enhance food quality and nutrient composition, and reduce the increased need for pesticides by creating pesticides resistant crops (Robinson AW, 2016). Additionally, GMOs enhance food security, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, enhance resistance to diseases and pests, and for medicinal purposes to the ever-growing population.
