In Canada, more than 500 plants are used in indigenous medicine. Aboriginal practitioners are skilled in selecting the correct part of the plant to use, the correct dosage and whether the medicine should be applied as a poultice, eaten, inhaled or
brewed as a tea and sipped.
In this project you will research the use of traditional medicine in the treatment of three circulatory and/or nervous system diseases of your choice.

o Work through the lessons, videos and resources in both Units 4 (Circulatory Systems) and 5 (Nervous System).
o Research the use of traditional medicine for any three nervous and/or circulatory system diseasesof your choice. You can choose any combination of systems diseases - 1 of circulatory system and 2 of nervous system, or all three of the nervous system, or any combination.
o Prepare a presentation and submit using the assignment tool.
o Your presentation should:
o be between 500-750 words
o have easy to understand key concepts that stand out
o have relevant supporting diagrams, illustrations and pictures where appropriate and cited appropriately
o describe how the medicine is used for the purpose it is being prescribed
o be of excellent quality such that it:
• is well-proofread, no errors
• has accurate and relevant information
• is attractive with an engaging layout in any format of your choice eg. Prezi, power point etc.
o have a minimum of 3 references properly referenced using APA style. Note that APA style can be easily looked up on the internet, but two useful websites include:

Indigenous people in Canada have been using plants as traditional medications. They identified over 400 species, including lichens, fungi, and algae, with medicinal applications. After Europeans and other newcomers arrived in Canada, they adopted plant medicines that aboriginal people used. According to Sarris (2018), practitioners have outstanding skills in selecting the proper dosage and correct part of a plant to use. Traditional medicine is one of the oldest forms of healthcare globally to prevent and treat nervous system illnesses. Over the years, plant medicines have gained approval as alternative medications across Canada and other western countries. Aboriginal practitioners utilize traditional plant medicine in treating hypertension, cancer, and heart attacks.
Hypertension is one of the conditions that result from the hardening of the arteries. As such, victims are at an increased risk of heart diseases and stroke. Therefore, many countries have adopted traditional plant medications in the treatment and management of the condition. Over the last two decades, interest in searching for drugs from natural sources has gained global attention. According to Liperoti et al. (2017), natural plants and herbs are sources of medications with adequate bioavailability and fewer side effects for hypertension treatment. Since hypertension is one of Canada’s prevailing conditions, traditional medicine might be effective for hypertension therapy. A high percentage of hypersensitive patients utilize herbal medications based on their low costs.
Besides, plant medications are effective in the treatment and management of cancer as a nervous system condition. Medicinal herbs and related derivative phytocompounds are effective complementary treatments for cancer. However, the practitioners use herbal medicines together with other forms of conventional therapeutics.
