Computers have become common today and are being used all over the world to help run different errands. Today, a computer does not have to be a single device, but anything that has been programmed is called a computer. For example, our smartphones are computers as well as our watches. The advancements in the field of technology have been incredible, and the world continues to see new pieces of technology every day.
However, in the past, computers were not as small as they are today. In fact, computers could fit entire rooms and be operated by specific individuals who were deemed capable of handing them. Before we get to how early computers looked like, it is crucial that we first establish who invented this great piece of work.
In the past, computers were considered to be people. In his article, Harris (2018) notes that a computer “was a person, someone who literally sat around all day, adding and subtracting numbers and entering the results into tables.” These tables would then be included in books which people would use to help them in various things. Then came Charles Babbage, a man who developed what resembles today’s computer. Babbage is known for his work on the difference engine which was to help simplify mathematical calculations. However, this did not materialize as his funding ran out. Babbage did not give up and came up with the analytical engine a device that resembles what today’s computers look like.
