Guys vs. Men Dave Barry

Essay Instructions:

Dave Barry Guys vs. Men

• How would you define "guys"? What characteristics does Barry leave out? Can a female be a "guy" (as in "When we go shopping, my grandmother is just one of the guys")? Write an essay setting forth your definition of "guys." Or choose another gender term (such as men, women, girls, or girlfriends), and write an essay that gives "another way to look" at gender through your definition of this term. Answer in a well-constructed, double-spaced essay of no more than two paragraphs

1.    Dave Barry starts to define what he means by "guys" and then says, "I don't know. I haven't thought that much about it" (5). He's being funny, right? Does his extended definition of guys lead you to believe that he has thought intelligently about what guys are? How so?
2.    Males, says Barry, can be divided into two basic classes. What are the distinguishing characteristics of each?
3.    To write his humor column, Barry doesn't ever need to buy a new, more powerful computer. But he says in paragraph 13 that he will do it anyway. What principle of guy behavior is he illustrating here?
4.    In paragraph 16, Barry develops his definition of guys as neat-stuff-buying animals by CONTRASTING them with women. How does he define women in this paragraph? Do you think his definition is accurate? If not, how would you revise what he says?
5.    Do you agree or disagree with Barry that "virtually all" sports fall into the "poindess challenge" category (25)? What about U.S. foreign policy?
6.    Guys, says Barry, "are similar" to his dog Zippy (26). This is a definition by analogy. What specific characteristics, according to Barry, do guys and Zippy have in common? Do you think the comparison is just? In what one way does even Barry admit that unleashed guys are generally superior to dogs?

Barry writes on his own understanding about what it means to be a guy by emphasizing on particular characteristics and uses humor to emphasize his points. The writer uses stereotypes, but admits to not knowing the definition of a guy, and insinuates that a man has more responsibility and is mature. A man is different from a woman based on gender role and stereotypes and the way their brains function. Even though, being a man comes with age, it extends to having a strong character after transition from boyhood to manhood. It is through character that one has a set of beliefs that guide them including integrity, courage and honesty. Even boys have characters, but men develop their characters and can choose the right thing when no one is looking.
Like Barry’s writing, being a man shows a sense...
