Introduction
The term McDonaldization refers to a definite rationalization process of work, factors of production and consumption pattern within the organization. The idea of conceived from the characteristics of fast food restaurant. The rationalization process includes efficiency, predictability, standardization, and control of limited resources in the society. McDonaldization process aims at breaking down particular tasks into small tasks for better outcomes. The broken tasks are then rationalized to find a single best efficient approach completing the task. The most suitable approach is universally adopted, and other approaches are disregarded in the process. The fundamental aim of McDonaldization is to produce an efficient, logical sequence of approaches that can be reproduced every time to yield a similar outcome. The resultant outcome from the method must be predictable, can easily be controlled. The consistency and the quantity of the outcome are inevitable. McDonald’s chain of restaurant is a practical example of rationalization of institution and organization.
Summary of the article
According to the article, the McDonaldization of society is realized when the community, institutions, and organization are harmonized to have the similar principle of management and characteristic like McDonald's fast food chain. All McDonald's fast food chain have similar efficiency, control, and standardization. The article further argues that the Ritzer’s theory of McDonaldization is depicted from the classical theory of Max Weber. The theorist conceptualized how rationality produced bureaucracy, which is the fundamental organizing force of the modern society. Weber defined the modern bureaucracy by hierarchical roles and compartmentalized knowledge and roles. This can further be defined through a perceived merit-based system of recruitment as well as the legal rationality authority of the rules and regulation. This aspect of bureaucracy is observed throughout various aspect of societies globally.
The article further argues that the consistent changes in science, economy and cultural beliefs have shifted the societies from focusing on Weber's bureaucracy to a new dimension of social structure and order. Four primary aspects characteristically define such new economic and social order. Efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control are among the vital aspect.
