Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) food refers to products whose genetic contents have been alerted using genetic engineering techniques to boost their quality and quantity. The modification is done in crops and animals. In the recent years, the GMO foods have flooded the consumer market with over 30,000 different food products. However, most people are unaware of their existence in the market as many are not labeled. The GMO products in the market have met both praises and criticism from the consumers and the concerned authorities like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thus, Limitation of GMO food is necessary because a complete ban will cut the benefits brought in agriculture and food sector.
In the agriculture industry, GMO has helped in the production of crops that are resistant to diseases and pests. Also, the GMO science has introduced fast growing crops that produce large yields. As a result, farmers produced more food in small pieces of land. In addition, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has revealed that many of the GMO foods such as fruits and vegetable are characterized by good tastes and high nutrients.
Concerning the food sector, GMO programs have been essential because of the fast growing crops that have helped in delivering food in hunger-stricken regions around the world.
