Social Problems
Social problems incorporate several things, however, they consist of two major components in common. First, the issue must be a “social state” that affects the society and secondly it must have negative consequences to the society. Social problems are grouped into four main stages; public outcry, developing a response, reaction to the response, and creating alternative strategies to deal with the problem (Le Grand). These stages happen over and over depending on what the society views as a social problem. For a problem to be viewed as a social issue, it must affect a large number of people in the society. The issues are known to have affected the lives of many people. The society is full of things that does not seem good. It is common to see children and adults in the streets begging on the streets. In some situations, interventions are put in place to suppress the social problems including drastic measures such as inflicting physical punishments, locking people up and in the worst cases, killing them. Such drastic measures are put in place to prevent and stop social problems through controlling the people who are the problems such as terrorist and thieves. People who want to control social problems are in most cases linked with the idea that the social issues pose security concern to social order. The problem with using such drastic measures in dealing with social problems is that they do not always protect “social order”, but they are in the best interest of people being punished (Walton and Wilson)
Certain measures put in place to improve “social conditions” that result to problems that cause social justice, providing some level of social protection or improving social welfare. In the 20th century, the creation of welfare states in the highly advanced industrial communities was linked with the attempts to brining positive changes to the social problems or protects citizens from dangers to their social wellbeing. Development of the welfare states r...
