How do these pieces explore the impact on people when work goes away (unemployment, loss of industry, retirement)? Be sure to provide specific examples from your selected readings/videos to support your views.Part II:Respond to the thoughts and ideas of at least two of your peers by commenting, asking a question, or sharing a connection.renahti Randolph Roger & MeCOLLAPSEDocumentary film Roger & Me (1989) focuses on the 30,000 jobs lost at General Motors. Director Michael Smith was on a search to find General Motors CEO, Roger Smith. He wanted answers about why he let go of so many jobs in Flint, Michigan. Citizens began to march in the streets in anger and uproar. The Christmas scene where Smith is finally interviewed by Michael Scott compares the Poem “Digger Laid Off” by Jim Danieals. Scott asked Smith if he knew what happened to the jobs lost in Flint, Michigan. He then proceeded to deny any relation to the issue. The comparison with the poem is the thousands of workers' jobs lost. Struggling to get a new job for months afterwards that led to some losing their homes or becoming homeless. Without having a stable source of income every month it prevents those to provide for their families. Kahri Wynn Week 10COLLAPSEIn the movie Roger And Me thousands of people were laid off and were unemployed for a while, some people were evicted and had to leave Flint Michigan. Many workers over 20,000 people were out of jobs. In the video A Brief History Of Work it talks about the pandemic and all of the jobs had to close some permanently. These two events compare because they have similar effects to them. The plants closed in Flint which led to job loss, permanently closed places and people out of work. People were evicted from their homes because they couldn’t pay their rent and or mortgage. In the pandemic I’d say it contrasts because the pandemic was a virus going around killing people and the world in a way was shut down. We had to stay home. People were unemployed until the world started getting low covid numbers. Another way I'd say it compares is some people say that the government put out covid to bring the population down and in the movie Roger Smith shut down the plants to build foreign plants to make money. When things like this happen people have no clue what to do, I know I wouldn’t. The impact on people from things such as unemployment, retirement, and loss of industry is harsh and confusing I’d say. Some people are happy to be unemployed or to retire and others don’t know their next move because all they know is that job everyday and now their lives have changed. Loss of industry is hard because out of nowhere you have no job but you still have bills and need to feed yourself or your family so the impact from that is sad and hard for people. The events from flint and the pandemic are similar and have small differences but are important to the working life and have impacted it significantly.
Last week's readings explore the impact on workers when they are laid off or must find new careers when industries change. Read the following poems.● "The Mill" by Edwin Arlington Robinson (1920● "Unemployment" by Tom Wayman (1973)● "Thank You for Your 15 Years of Service to the Department" by Carol Tarlen(2012)Read the first three parts of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis (1915), one of the most well-known pieces of modern literature. The first part gives us the plight of Gregor Samsa who awakens from sleep to find himself transformed into a bug. Despite this dramatic change, he is only focused on his job as a salesman and how he won’t be able to complete his tasks and satisfy the expectations of the grip that work has on his life. Notice the references to time, as Gregor’s thoughts are detailed in this passage.● Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (1915) - First Three Parts Onlyhttps://youtu.be/DiHfVbCUdwc

Week 10 Discussion: When Work Disappears
Part 1
The events depicted in the film Roger & Me was about the loss of work in the labor force, specifically about the events after GM Motors closed its doors in Flint, Michigan, and left thousands of workers without livelihoods (Roger & Me). The outcome of this massive loss of jobs is the downfall of the economy in Flint and the rise of crime rates in it because many people were left without ways to feed their families. In the film, it was depicted that some of the families were evicted from their homes as a result. This shows the devastating effects of unemployment and loss of industry in one area, and if it were to happen in another, the same outcome would surely occur. The happenings in the film are related to the plight of the miller and his wife in The Mill, where because of the development of technology, more and more professions are becoming obsolete, which led to the loss of the job of the miller and his wife’s worrying about what he could have done out of devastation (Robinson). Both of these pieces demonstrate the shattering effects of losing one’s source of income, both in their personal life and their fami...
