Higher rates of separation
 As Warren indicates, cohabiting couples fail to realize that the attitude of a trial marriage never dies and it follows such couples into marriage (Warren 10). Such couples have conditional love that remains for as long as things between them remain unsour but when they inevitably do, they are fast in breaking their union. This is the reason why those that cohabit before marriage have a forty six percent higher chance of divorce as compared to those that refrain from cohabitation in the first place (Fitzgibbons n.p).
Effect on children
Children require the stability from the knowledge that their parents have a lasting commitment to each other. Cohabitation denies seventy five percent of all children born in cohabiting relationships the opportunity of experiencing such comfort and stability (Warren 11). Other studies strongly recommend that the traditional family based upon marriage is the best atmosphere for raising children and it also forms the basis of a sound larger society (Crouse 64). A marriage based family allows children to stay away from social vices such as drugs, teenage sex and early pregnancy, and problems such as dropping out of school and subsequent poverty.
Lack of openness and marital abuse
Cohabiting partners are often trapped into a lifetime of pretense because such a relationship is not based on vows of permanence that allows spouses to reveal their real self to each other. Cohabiting spouses embroil in pleasing one another to prolong their union because failure to do so results in an end to the relationship.
