The provision of high quality education is a responsibility bestowed upon the government. In this case, both the federal and state governments. The education policies between these two distinct levels of government need to be merged so as to offer a uniform, stratified body or regulations that runs the education system as one. This however, isn’t the problem. Much of the challenges facing education in the country has been as a result of the constant pull and push between these two levels of government, concerning educational policies. The No Child Left Behind policy was quite good in ensuring a level ground for every student. The friction between state and federal government however, still showed.
The push and pull between these two levels of government first comes from the funding requirements of the education system. While it was traditionally a community affair, much of the funding is now done by state governments. From the readings, it is quite clear that the state governments fund almost 90% of the educational system, especially public elementary and secondary education (p.183).The state meanwhile, has largely been a ‘spectator’ but with the overall authority due to the fact that it allocates the land for these institutions and has historically been in charge of the legal issues emanating from education, through the supreme court.
