On September 8, 2019, BBC News reported that President Donald Trump had called off the peace talks with the Taliban. The United States of America (USA) has been sending its military to Afghanistan since 2001 to revenge against al-Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden headed the al-Qaeda and admitted the full responsibility of September 11, 2001 attacks (BBC News). The events in this article portray realism, where the USA does not want the Taliban to overthrow the current government of Afghanistan. Moreover, the USA mission is to eliminate terrorists who are enemies of peace.
Frederic Hof portrays the significance of the USA intervention in Syria to help the country gets on its feet again. The primary objective of the USA-Syria policy is to foster the transition from extremist system to a legitimate one. Other critical goals that the USA will oversee are eliminating members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), protecting civilians, and neutralizing al-Qaeda (Hof). The events in the story are more consistent with liberalism. The USA government want to restore Syrians liberty after a long period of armed conflicts.
The exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia was one step in the right direction, which will ease the tension that has been piling up. As the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, welcomed the 35 freed people at Kyiv Airport, he said that the action was a step toward stopping the war between the two countries (Nechepurenko and Higgins). The series of events between Ukraine and Russia are more consistent with liberalism. Besides, the move by the two governments enhances individual freedom, particularly prisoners.
Tatiana Lacerda Prazeres portrays that the hidden reason for the trade war between China and the USA is services. Although tariffs have a direct impact on imports and exports, the services associated with various products such as automobile are numerous (Prazeres). As such, realism is evident in this article since it shows why both countries are prepared to compete to have the largest market share in the future. The trade rivalry affects the international relationship between the two countries, where companies such as Huawei are restricted from operating in the USA.
