Manhood is thought of as eternal, a timeless essence that lives deeply in every human being's heart. We believe that masculinity is something that either one possesses or does not have. We believe that manhood is intrinsic and that the results of androgens or the existence of a penis are found in the unique biological composition of the male (Michael, p.62). We consider masculinity an important tangible feature every person in the world must manifest, a tremendous prize for successfully finishing a hard initiation procedure for a young novice. The framework at the bottom of the masculine mind is as strong as it was 20,000 years ago, says the poet Robert Bly (1990).
We regard masculinity as an ever-changing set of meanings that we build through our connections with one another and with our surroundings. Manhood is neither eternal nor unchanging; it is historical. Manhood is not a manifestation of an inner being; it is built socially. Manhood does not burst out of our biological composition to the awareness; it is produced in culture (Connell, p.59). Manhood implies many things to various individuals at different eras. By opposing a number of 'other racial minorities, Sexual Minorities and, above all, women, we learn how it stands to be a man of our society.
In the political and social context in which connections between women and men are developed, our notions of manhood are ever-changing. The quest for a transcendent, timeless definition of masculinity is a societal phenomenon at periods of crisis. We tend to look for the timeless and eternal, those transitions when old definitions are no longer working, and new meanings still have to be clearly defined.
The concept that manhood is socially built and historically changing cannot be viewed as a loss to the absence of something from mankind. Indeed, it provides us the ability to act, something really precious. It provides us with a feeling of historical potential to replace the dismal resignation that always takes place in the timeless, historical isms. Our conduct didn't only eat human nature because "boys are going to be boys." We are engaged in building our worlds, our identities using the resources we find around us in our culture, other people, ideas, and artifacts. Men can evolve individually as well as collectively.
