Memory and climate change-The memory of people and memory of the land research
Readings
Reconstructing people’s memory needs to represent the past while incorporating views from individuals and not the institutionalized views of memory and the past. Crane (1373) highlighted that historical knowledge in historical narrative is essential in collective memory and expresses the past in the present. Collective memory is shared among groups and memory shapes an individual’s understanding of the environment and the past and sometimes reinforces past perceptions. Memory is constructed, and dominant stories are one way to evaluate collective memories and perceptions of shared understandings and memory. Crane distinguishes collective memory from historical memory to show the terms have been used in different contexts, and the writer highlights historical memory shapes collective memory.
There were three sources from the Coastal Metropolis edited by Carl A. Zimring highlighting waste management and how Newtown Creek, New York, was transformed. While the Creek is one of the most polluted in New York, people still look for houses overlooking the Creek and tributary as they seek the convenience of the location (Zimring 203). On the other hand, the introduction focuses on the history of New York’s five boroughs, one of the most densely populated in the US since the 19th century (Zimring and Corey 3-4). Focusing on the region’s environmental history is a helpful approach to evaluate how changes in land use, the urban environment, and policies have influenced waste management and infrastructure. The last chapter emphasizes increased awareness of developing better infrastructure and waste management as New York’s population keeps increasing, and there is greater demand for services (Zimring and Corey 235-236). The last chapter further emphasized environmental history, policies on the built environment, and financing infrastructure as essential elements to understanding New York’s urban environment.
 Authors’ arguments and writing
When writing from collective memory, it is necessary to consider the subject of collective memory and how spatial factors influence perceptions of the past and present. While the idea of collective memory often focuses on people and nations, evaluating how people understand environmental history can provide insights into how changes have led to an improvement in land efficient land use. Memory is manifested in oral and written works, artistic and cultural expressions, and even everyday objects that reflect perceptions of one of the people and place. Memory is linked to personal identity and history, but there may be differences in how people decide to remember past things. Different people influence collective memory individually, even in a minimal way. Still, the influence is greater and more visible based on their position in society, such as policymakers and leaders who support infrastructural projects to facilitate land use.
