Discuss whether the EU is a nation or a state
Background
There is no consensus on the meaning of a nation and a state. Nations are constructed where people who share the same culture and identify as belonging to the same nation. Kin folk relations among those sharing the same culture can also mean that a diaspora can also be part of a nation while living in a different geographical location from other members of the nation. A state generally means institutions or institutions that enforce order where entities enforce orders such as the police force (Gellner 4). States tend to form systems as there is a tendency to control territory and a population, but states change over time depending on the political forces, economics, and social forces (Tilly 4).The EU is not a nation but shares elements with a state and is made up of member states that have agreed to follow specific laws and regulations through treaties and agreements.
Nation
Since a nation refers to a set of people united by common bonds such as language, culture, religion, customers, or race, the EU is not a nation. In a nation, the customs and traditions that shape its history are also shared, and Europeans come from diverse backgrounds where there are various official and working languages. Each of the EU member states has their unique national identities, based on their political structures, history, and constitutions, and shared sovereignty. Nations are not always countries as members of a nation can be found in more than one country, but states can pursue national interests. A nation can be a country or people who identify with a common background, and this is not the case with the EU.
Nations are generally governed by the same government and have a common tradition, but EU member states have their own governments. Even as the EU leaders meet and pass policy priorities and initiatives, a majority of the member states need to agree or there is consensus. Adopting EU rules, regulations and policies does not stop member countries from adopting policies to protect their self-interests. The heads of state or government address people of a nation about issues that are of national interests. Governments exercise power and have authority over a territory. There are some that are common in the EU, but the countries are not under the same government or share the same culture.
People in a nation may share culture despite coming from different backgrounds, but they tend to conform when a particular culture is associated with a state. The concept of nations is closely linked with nationalism. There is the convergence of cultural and political units and political legitimacy that is partly related to people having a shared culture (Gellner 55). Even in people from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, their allegiance to a nation is possible when identifying with a specific culture (Gellner 100). Even people in various EU members sharing certain customs and traditions with others, Europeans still have different cultural identities.
