Response to the Trans Media Criticism Paper
Introduction
In the recent past, the political and social issues related to the welfare of the LGBT group have evolved to become a global concern. While some countries such as Argentina, Canada, and the Netherlands have increased their efforts to promote equity and recognize the human rights of the LGBT persons, in other states such as Indonesia and Russia, discrimination against the group continues to heighten. The discrimination has been majorly attributed to society's perception towards gender identity, sexual orientation, and culture. There is a need to evaluate these driving forces, particularly culture in the effort to effectively address this problem, rather than dwelling on various ways the LGBTQ community is discriminated against. This piece of work "speaks back" to the transmedia criticism paper that explored the problems faced by the LGBTQ persons including employment discrimination. The argument in the current paper is motivated by a statement by the former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the Oslo Conference on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Ban Ki-moon stated, “I respect culture, tradition, and religion, but they can never justify the denial of basic rights” (Lee, par.2).
Discrimination against the LGBTQ Community
Numerous writers and scholars have focused on highlighting the varied ways through which the transgender and nonbinary persons are discriminated against in their different environments including workplaces and homes. Hines (1) stated that employees who belong in the LGBTQ community working in at least seventeen states of the U.S face employment prejudice since they are not protected. Some states hold that it is acceptable, under the law, to fire or mistreat an employee for identifying himself or herself as nonbinary or transgender (Hines 1). The extent of this problem has had a critical negative impact on the productivity of the country. Although the article by Hines (1) does not provide substantial evidence to prove the existence and impact of discrimination against the LGBTQ community in the United States, numerous scholarly works and research studies have attested the point. Gossett, Stanley, and Burton (28) noted that the problem is entrenched to the extent that the members of the community discriminate against themselves. In one of the revelations, a character states, “the mainstream gays and lesbians still don’t care about us (transgender); they’re not doing things to help keep us safe or to help promote us” (Gossett, Stanley, & Burton, 28).
Priorities in Addressing the Issue of Discrimination against the LGBTQ Community
To avert the potential negative effects of discrimination against the LGBTQ people on community and national levels, it is important to focus on addressing the primary driving forces influencing the social ill rather than emphasizing on how the groups are discriminated upon.
