ASSIGNMENT FOUR: Cultural Ethnography
Length: 1200 words (about 5 pages)
Format: Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-pt. font
Grade: 20% of Final Grade
An ethnography is a genre of writing used primarily by anthropologists to research a culture or a group of people and their practices within a certain environment. The researcher of an ethnography does fieldwork to collect information about the culture/group he/she is studying. This means the researcher enters the culture/group’s environment and observes the practices, actions, reactions, discussions, beliefs, and traditions that take place within this environment.
For this assignment, you will act as an ethnographer in a cultural space of your choice, researching this space through observation, gathering written materials at the space, asking members of the cultural space questions, and doing additional research.
Your first step in this assignment is to identify a cultural space. While the word culture means many things to many people, for the purposes of this assignment, think of a culture as any group of people who come together in a physical space and have (at least some) common practices, behaviors, and/or beliefs. Here are some possible cultural spaces:
• Church, temple, or religious space
• Community center
• Neighborhood hang-out spot
• Store in a mall
• Tattoo parlor
• Barber shop/hair salon/nail salon
• Basketball court
• Library
• Performance Venue (music, theater, etc.)
• Gym
• Museum (Art museum, history museum, children’s museum, etc.)
• Public Park
Food related cultural space
• School cafeteria
• Sit-down restaurant
• A soup kitchen
• Food pantry
• Coffee Shop/ Cafe
• Grocery Store
• Corner Store / Bodega
• Farmer’s Market
• Food Court (in a mall / an airport)
• Fast Food restaurant
• Wholesale Food Market
• Farm or a local CSA
• Specialty Food Market
One important thing to keep in mind about this assignment: an ethnographer is a researcher who is distanced or removed from what he or she studies. This means that even if you identify with or belong to the culture you choose to write about, you should pretend that you are an outsider who is looking in on this culture. While you can talk to members of this group, you must act like you don’t belong to the group as you interact with group members.
Research: Primary and Secondary Research as described below
1. All the research for this project must be based on:
• your own observation of the place/space (or memories of seeing it);
• interviews with at least two people about their experience of the space and the activities that take place there;
• artifacts or objects you are able to take from the space with you; and
• articles (provided in class or researched and found by you in one of QCC’s electronic databases.)
2. Guidelines for interviews:
• The purpose of the interview is to find out what the space means to your interviewees, what they get from the space, why they spend time there. You may ask them very direct questions, but part of your job as a researcher is to determine this from your analysis of what they say.
• Ask them to tell you a story(ies) or memories of their experience(s) in the space. This will provide evidence of what the space means to them more than asking them directly.
• Record what they say in field notes (or audio or video if they agree and if you have access to the technology)

Ethnography of Boise State University Cafeteria
My name is Naila, a regular customer of the Boise cafeteria at Boise State University. I fell in love with the Boise cafeteria two years ago and became a regular customer. The premise is excellent in its service but more so a source of freshness with tasty drinks, simple foods for the customers, and the quick service that the employees offer to the customers. Boise cafeteria is within Boise State University, North Idaho, and 400 meters from the main center. Customers flock ready to drink soft drinks, fast foods in a welcoming environment in the surrounding for relaxation. I am a loyal customer at the premise and confess the tantalizing and appetizing chicken tikka and baggers apart from cool and refreshing cold drinks I take from the premise.
Fredrick is a chef, and a friend who possesses cookery and service skills, invited me to the Boise cafeteria in January 2017 for lunch. We discussed an event that I was planning for the homecoming of my father from New Jersey.
The management of Boise cafeteria employed Fredrick in 2012 when the premise was three years in operation, and currently, he is one of the senior employees whom the customers trust. The first visit at the cafeteria changed my perception of love eating out, and I became loyal due to its décor, ambiance, and the overall design. Such décor and color combinations rhymed my hue and developed an interest to stay longer at the place feeling at home in the end. "Boise cafeteria is a home for many…Wait…You won't be alone for a long time", said Fredrick as he passes me a glass of fruit punch (Fredrick and Henry 1).
The outside environment is green with a lovely landscaping technique that brings much of shadows with bright sun rays striking between the leaves to the seats under the trees. Moreover, the grass field has uniformity in trimming with colorful flowers that boost the esteems of a person. The appearance of the Boise cafeteria is a match to its surroundings with a conspicuous billboard reading, "Welcome to your second home!" The customers at the premise are loyalists to the extent that the Boise cafeteria serves even the outsiders who find its foods fresh and of high quality. The customers, in most cases, order takeaways and quick eatables such as cookies, fruit salads, fruit punk, and French fries, among others. I never believed my eyes in the long queue, indicating that the income from such a venture is a boom (Fredrick and Henry 1).
Data Presentation on Observations on 12th September 2019
"Hello sir, today we have a special offer for our loyal customers. Can you please have a taste of the special food?" Jenny smiled and handed me a side-plate filled with kebab and roasted lamb cut seasoned with mild chili sauce. "Wow, it is amazing," I said as I gladly consent to her to place the food item on the cover (Jenny and Henry 1). Fredrick smiled and encouraged me to go ahead and take it with chilled fresh mango fruit juice.
I was new to the rule of the Boise cafeteria that a loyal customer gets a free meal after every 19th appearance at the premise and I was the lucky person on that day. Besides, the rule encourages employees. The employee who has ...
