Is emotion the hidden motive for history?
The word empathy has several definitions; it encompasses a wide range of emotion states like caring for other people or having the desire to help those in need. Empathy is viewed as a process of experiencing emotions similar to another person’s emotion, especially when faced with difficulties. Empathy is the ability to feel and share another person's emotions. Our experiences influence the decisions we make, reason typically operates in concurrence with emotion to create the foundations of human rights and social justice. Empathy has the power to transform relationships; hence, empathy is the key to fundamental social changes.
To understand how reason operates in concurrence with emotion, the evacuation story written by Roman Krznaric explains the different perspective of empathy that creates the foundations of human rights and social justice. The evacuation of 1939 to 1944, where one to two million children were evacuated from major cities to rural areas in Britain to escape the German bombs, is one of the historical events showing the power of emotion to influence relationships (Krznaric 1). The discussion of the evacuation portrayed the emotional turmoil and trauma during these periods. Children were separated from their families, placed in homes where they did not experience parental love. However, the central aspect of the evacuation process was seen when well-off rural homeowners showed a very empathetic understanding, when they stepped into the lives of the urban poor (Krznaric 2).
