Representation of marginalized groups has always been a controversial and evolving topic in the television world. One prominent group is the LGBTQ+ community, whose representation in TV shows has been wide-ranging across different eras. This paper aims to compare the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in two TV shows from different periods: A Different World Season 1 Ep. 1 "Reconcilable Differences" (1987) and Ellen S4 episode 22 "The Puppy Episode (pt-1)" (1997). Through a close reading of these two shows, this paper will analyze the representational patterns and offer an interpretation of how LGBTQ+ characters have been depicted in these two television shows.
The TV show A Different World is a spin-off of the popular sitcom The Cosby Show which follows the lives of students at a historically black college. In the first episode, "Reconcilable Differences," one of the main characters, Denise Huxtable, meets a new student named Jaleesa, who reveals that she is divorced. Although this may not seem like a big deal in the current society, during the 1980s, it was considered a taboo topic. This is evident from the shock and judgmental glances Jaleesa's revelation is met with from the other characters. Nonetheless, Jaleesa's divorce is not portrayed as a result of her being a lesbian, and there are no LGBTQ+ characters or themes in this episode.
