China is among the most populated countries in the world with a population of over 1.2 billion people. Classification is based on people with the same language, live in the same territory and have a common economic and psychological way of life. This, however, gives two broad groups which are the Hans and Non-Hans, who are the minorities (Blum pg. 72). The above assumption criteria for classification are an issue of concern since there might be possible assimilation from either side. This paper will examine the ethnic diversity in China with emphasis on the minority non-Hans group.
The classification of people into various groups started way back in the 1940s when the state was known as the People's Republic of China (Blum pg.73). This was after they realized the existence of 400 Minzu names in the voter registration exercise in Yunnan, which is a huge state in China. The existing classification methods, however, owe their existence to the works of Henry Rodolph who made the first scientific categorization (Mullaney pg330).
