Medical workers face various patients, leading to different challenges as patients do not always have the same situations. Bester et al. stated that one event that is quite sensitive for both the workers and patients would be informed consent and autonomy. There will be times when a patient undergoes a critical event and have the right to decide of their own (870). Though, some circumstances can lead to medical workers taking action without consent as they prioritize their patients' safety.
According to Pellegrino, the medical industry's virtue is usually set as a foundation for a philosophical perspective in a normative view. These virtues are what make a health worker a normatively professional, and yet he argued that in some cases, virtues are not the only ones needed by a professional. He elaborated that moral events are given in every case that affects how a medical worker should act. These moral events are divided and interrelated to each other as they affect one another. These events include the moral agencies, the possible action that could occur, the event that influences the previous two, and its possible consequences. The latter three elements of moral events dictate that virtue does not stand alone as a factor for decision-making in the field of medicine (271).
The Case
Using the four elements of moral events; agent, act, circumstances, and consequences, this paper will establish a proper review of the situation and its possible action. For the first element, the agent, the theory under this is the virtue theory, which focuses on a physician's character in the given case. It holds physicians' innate characteristics that are influenced by the intention, desire, strength of will, or choices that have to make and are mostly related to moral psychology. Relating to the case, the part where the physicians are continuously pressuring the lady to apply for surgery is an act due to this agent. Since Żolnerz et al. indicated that in medicine, compassion has been part of every medical worker's life. They understood that compassion is a moral virtue that drives people in the medical industry to be observant of how serious a situation is and take proper actions according to the possible results (937). This particularly states that the physician in the case is requesting the lady to take action because of known outcomes, and as a physician, whose priority is the safety of their patients, will eventually want to take action.
Notably, it can be thought that the lady continued to refuse the suggestion of surgery of the physician, act when the physician asks for the consent of the lady is the principle that protects the rights of the patients. This follows up the second element, the act, or deontology, which focuses on determining whether an act is right with having the moral standard.
