In The Precious Scroll of Thunder Peak, Lady Bai, Guanyin, and the Chan master Fahai interact differently and are cast in different roles. Guanyin has the most positive character of the three. Lady Bai (Lady White) or Bai Suzhen, the huge white snake spirit, is the main character who turns into a beautiful lady and is righteous. Guan Yin is a bodhisattva associated with compassionate acts by intervening when the other main characters are in trouble. Chan master Fahai is a Buddhist monk who seeks to separate the spirits from humans and the mortal realm believing it is a way to fight evil. However, since the monk does not want Lady Bai to love human beings, he tries to break up her family because Bai is a menace.
Lady Bai writes a letter to her brother and states, “In going there I, your sister, have no other intention but to venerate Guanyin in Tianzhu with greatest sincerity” (Idema 14).
