ESSAY PREPARATION
According to Esposito, all religions have stories that help humanity understand “mortality, morality, and meaning”. This claim suggests that the central concerns of the religions are similar even if their practices and beliefs are diverse.
According to Hopfe (Introduction and Chapter 1), the basic nature of the world religions is similar despite the obvious diversity. The nature of religion, we are told, can be broken into five (5) main categories.
Reread both texts very carefully and be prepared to apply what you learn from there with what you learned in the other readings.
The higher grades (Bs and As) are reserved for students who can analyze and argue based on the information and data found in the readings.
If your paper is detailed and repeats faithfully what is in the text but has no specific thesis, the best you could expect would be a high C.

Religion is a universal phenomenon from the major world religions and minor religions including folk religions. World religions emphasize the private spiritual life, but there are different beliefs on the place of public teaching in religion and spirituality. Confucianism is a religion and philosophy, which relies on rituals and focuses on morality and also promotes promote or worship nature and ancestors. The religion emerged in China and affirms the values of love, non-violence, justice and sincerity, and in Jainism the idea of ahimsa refers non-injury of living beings and non-violence (Hopfe and Woodward Part II). Jainism emerged from India teaches that the universe is eternal and has no creator and even as there are gods they have little effect on human beings. The religion further teaches a spiritual path that makes it possible for the soul to escape the influence of Karma, which is a cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth (Hopfe and Woodward 1.2). Comparative religious on practices and concepts offer insights on the similarities and differences in religious teachings of Confucianism and Jainism.
Tribal myths, rituals and behaviors are closely linked as they answer questions of where they come from and where they are going, but religions offer different explanation and visions of the future. Making sense of their lives, how they should live and life after death were questions that emerged as human beings first sought to understand the meaning of life as some communities lost their tribal way of life (Esposito, Fasching and Lewis 17). Material offerings, Psychic worship and meditation are common Jain rituals and in Confucianism there is more focus on divination and ancestor veneration and offerings are made to the ancestors in shrines. Nonetheless, rituals are important part of both religions.
Confucianism does not address the question of the afterlife as there is emphasis on how to live and treat others, but Jains are guided towards path to be god like and are reborn in a better state if they are good. In Confucianism the philosophical concept of yin yang where yin is “dark, cool, and female is fundamental to understand the religion and philosophy. “Yang is light, warm, and male” and the two forces balance” (Hopfe and Woodward P 3.1).Jainism has a dualistic worldview where there uni...
