Jesus and the Syrophoenician Woman
During Jesus' healing ministry, he went into the region of Tyre whose population consisted of Gentiles. News of his miracles had traveled outside Jewish boarders. A Gentile woman whose origin was Syria and Phoenicia heard that Christ was in the vicinity and quickly sought him, knelt before him and begged Jesus to heal her daughter who was possessed by demons. Jesus asked her to first let the children eat since it was wrong to take their bread and feed it to dogs. Confidently, the woman answered that dogs also ate scraps of bread thrown to them under tables. Impressed by her faith, Jesus told her to go home where she'd find her daughter healed.
The main characters in the story are Jesus and the Syrophoenician woman. Jesus was Jewish and the woman was Gentile, and at the time the two tribes had no interactions (Keene 30).
