What is racism and how do we identify racism in ourselves and in people around us?
Racism is the discrimination or prejudice of others based on race. It is the belief that race in people accounts for different characters or abilities to do something and see others as special. Racism has existed in the United State since the slavery time when Africans we shipped to work as slaves in the plantations and industries. Today, over three quarters of unemployed Americans are Black Americans and Latinos. The way we talk about others or the minorities define who we are in the society. People have characteristics of a racist when they perceive other person has inferior and unknowledgeable about something. What do you see when you look at a black person or a Latino?
Racism is not biological has many might think, it is the artificial way of classifying individuals with no scientific variable facts. How we perceive other people’s ideas and faces defines if we are racists or not. In U.S today, the word white has changed meaning to include peoples such as Jews, Italians and Irish. Other minority groups such as pacific islanders, Latinos, American Indians, Africans and some descendants from Asia their acceptance has been difficult. The irregular grouping of the minorities as extended to educational lines, economical opportunities, health, political and social mobility. Do we foster racial inequality in our country? If so, in what ways is racism encouraged.
Racism has existed for ages in the society and in our systems, the system consists of white majority, this creates a line in the society that consists of different people from various background. The minority do not feel represented when government offices occupants are all whites and when whites get better treatment and services.
We foster for inequality in our country by not expressing equity in the systems. Inequality in employment develops hatred among individuals. For example, in 2009, a research conducted indicated that out of the total unemployment in the U.S, 15.5% were black while 8.3% were w...
