Comparison of Mark and Luke
The walk to Calvary is included in both gospels, and it showcases Jesus carrying the cross. The cross is quite heavy and Jesus falls a couple of times, and both gospels, Mark 15: 21-22 and Luke 23: 26- 27 mention Simon of Cyrene, a man that was compelled by the Roman soldiers to help Jesus carry the cross but Mark goes further and identify him as the father of Alexander and Rufus. The crowd following Jesus is large and Luke manages to tell us about a conversation between Jesus and a group of women who were weeping. Jesus turned and referred to them as daughters of Jerusalem, asking them not to weep for him rather for themselves and their children. They arrived at the place called Calvary according to Luke 23: 33, where Jesus and the other two criminals were to be crucified. Mark referred to the place as Golgotha, which when translated means the place of a skull. Jesus was crucified and the cross had the inscription, the king of the Jews. According to Luke 23:39-46, Jesus had a conversation with the two criminals and promised one of them that he will be with him in paradise and Jesus breathed his last saying, “into your hands I commit my spirit.”. Mark describes Jesus’ last words as, “Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani?” that translates to, “My God My God, why have you forsaken me?”
Peter’s denial is another significant moment that preceded the death and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. After they had captured Jesus, they brought him to the house of the high priest and Peter followed them all the way from a distance. According to Luke 22:54-57, a servant girl saw Peter seated by the fire and after carefully examining him, she said that Peter was with Jesus, something that Peter denied saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” The difference between Luke and Mark in this scenario is the other two denials. Mark 14:66-71 says that Peter was asked by the same servant girl, which he denied for the second time. The third time, a group that stood beside him got interested and said sure, he was one of them; as he was from Galilee and his speech showed it. In Mark, the cock crowed after the first denial by Peter and after the third denial fulfilling Jesus’ prophesy that Peter will have betrayed Jesus three times before the rooster crows twice. In Luke, however, the rooster only crows once after Peter’s third denial as the prophecy did not include the rooster crowing two times.
The journey to Emmaus is best and vividly explained by the gospel of Luke than Mark. Mark16: 12-13 has the same accounts but it does not name the destination they were heading to as Emmaus, and the disciples are referred to as ‘they’. Luke 24: 13-32 details the encounter of Jesus and the two disciples on their way to a village named Emmaus, and Luke referred to one of them as Cleophas. They were chatting about the recent events that took place in Jerusalem but their eyes could not recognize that they were talking to Jesus. Jesus was interested and he invited them to explain further which they did. The two talked about Jesus...
