People grieve when they lose a person whom they love. It is a natural human reaction, and it may take some time to accept the fact that someone has died. However, during the grieving process, one must fully understand, contain, and make sense of the grief they are experiencing. Therefore, there are methods for dealing with grief.
In John Cheever’s “The Death of Justina,” the main character, Moses,” shows the readers how he grieves for the death of Justina, his wife’s cousin, who died in their home (Cheever 516). Justina may have been a good person when she was alive, but her death has humiliated and shamed the family. Justina died in an area where no one, not even animals, could be buried. Moses has a long and exhausting journey to fulfill his desire to give Justina a funeral, but he still successfully provides a funeral for Justina (Cheever 516–522). Moreover, this incident teaches Moses that people who die are treated as garbage in their place, and he concludes that people do not understand death but want to understand love (Cheever 523).
