Overview of Humanistic School of Psychology
I feel that behavioral and humanistic schools of psychology are most relevant today for a particular rationale. Behaviorism is a psychology theory indicating that a person’s environment shapes their behavioral inclinations. This discipline of psychology significantly influenced thought in the mid-20th century and is still applied by mental health practitioners today as its theories and concepts are relevant in education and psychotherapy. For example, behaviorism concepts are used in systematic desensitization for persons with a phobia that is characterized by anxiety and fear of a situation or objects. Therapy entails using coping techniques or relaxation as individuals are slowly exposed to the situation or object. In addition, behaviorism is used in modeling – an approach where an individual learns behaviors by copying alone (Rivier University). In that way, behaviorism is applied in developmental psychology and could be included in clinical practice.
