General Instructions:
As a matter of policy, under the Trump administration, the US Government began separating families who seek asylum at, or when passing over, the various US border crossings.
Parents are separated from their children— the children labeled unaccompanied minors and sent to government custody or foster care, while the parents are often sent directly to jail or deported.
Between October 1, 2017, and May 31, 2018, at least 2,700 children have been split from their parents. Close to two thousand young people were separated over the last six weeks of that window — from April 18 to May 31 — indicating that on average 45 children were being taken from their parents each day.
For your paper, please consider these actions by the government within the context of Attachment Theory. Be specific when referring to domains of the theory that you are employing in your work. Your paper, which should be between 600 and 1000 words long, can be framed as a letter to the government, a scholarly exploration of these actions, or both. In it you should make sure to answer these questions:
· At what ages are young people most vulnerable to separations from the parents?
· What may be some the short-term psychological effect on young children as a result of abrupt separation from their parents?
· What may be some long-term psychological consequences of such separations?
To complete this assignment, you should draw on the reading from the Patricia Miller book, a documentary depicting the separation of little John, as well as any other material you deem relevant for your argument.

Family affection and attachment begin when a child is still very young and becomes stronger with time to the extent that separating a child from the mother or the caregiver creates a chain of suffering for both. President Donald Trump's administration introduced cross border policies that separated parents and their children from illegal immigrants (Kandel). After separating the children from their parents, they are labeled unaccompanied before sending them to foster care or government custody. The parents are then taken jail or deported back to their home countries. This separation for children from their parents is very dangerous to the child's development and the parents' mental health. Still, the psychological effects and consequences are more adverse to the child.
A child gets attached to the mother since birth, and the attachment bond grows stronger with time. A child develops trust with few people familiar to him as he or she grows (Miller). This is why sometimes when visitors visit, the child may refuse to interact with the visitors. The situation would be worse when they are taken to foster homes where they are not familiar. This makes it hard for children to adapt to foster care and governments' custody environments.
Most children separated from their parents are below ten years. This population is still very young and goes through a tough time away from their parents. Children are very attached to their caregivers at the age of ten and below, and separating them affects them psychologically. Short-term psychological effects include insecurity (Miller). Children feel secure when they are with their parents. Separating them induces fear because they are experiences knew unfriendly scenarios. Children above the age of 3 might think that something terrible will happen to them because they are old enough to differentiate good from bad, hence making them insecure. However, the is security is short-lived as they resume their normal behavior if they are not hurt or mistreated. The theory of attachment shows that children can easily adjust to new caregivers if they are treated well.
Another short-term psychological effect is anxiety. Children become anxious about their new experiences because of fear of the unknown. The attachment theory explains the hardships of cultural differences. Before the children adjust to the new culture, they are introduced to, and they often go through a rough time adjusting. Some may be used to having four meals a day, but the routine changes to two unhealthy meals. This means that their bodies find it hard to adjust, but it will only be for a while before they...
