In her article, Domus describes how young women in a small town started to display disturbing symptoms. As they tried to understand why these women were ill, local people and various experts proposed many theories.
According to Domus, what personal, emotional, social, or historical reasons (as opposed to scientific reasons) did people have for endorsing different theories about why the girls were sick? What can this tell us about how people tend to think about a serious problem when they have little information about the problem? Use at least FOUR pieces of evidence from the text to support your argument.

Le Roy is a small town in Western New York that comprises a working-class community and has good schools. Le Roy is a manufacturing town that is no longer successful with manufacturing. The majority of girls in Le Roy high school displayed tics, and through this, many individuals started coming out with a phenomenon to explain the entire situation. The condition worsened as parents wept for the problem that was going on. Months past and the situation worsened as people, including experts, were trying to explain what was happening. Parents would tell the experts that their daughters were happy and no trouble brought the condition. However, when the ladies started stuttering, it suggested something terrible was happening in the community.
According to the article, the majority of high school students experience tics. Parents started wondering what was wrong with their daughters because they realized that almost all their daughters were experiencing the same symptoms. Parents even went ahead to the New York State Department of health to conclude and get results about what has been happening to their daughters. However, the officials did not reveal results because of privacy concerns but assured the parents everything was okay. Many parents left the place with doubts, and they were not satisfied with the results because the situation continued. Doctors confirmed that the majority of the girls would subconsciously change stress into physical symptoms. While this explanation was made, it seemed that the symptoms were due to mental illness. This led to a massive dilemma for the whole community regarding finding out if the girls had mental illness or physical disease. Every individual had various reactions to both sides. Majority of the townspeople wanted to avoid the fact that their daughters had a mental illness to avoid the pressure that had escalated in the town.
The parents started imagining that there could be something in the water at the school premises or in the playing fields (Domus 2012, 3). Miller, one of the guardians, suspected a cluster of cancer on the streets (Domus 2012, 4). She mentioned that most of her neighbors were affected and had tumors. She earlier suspected that Katie, one of the patients, had similar symptoms, and her condition might be from environmental as well. Beth Miller also had a theory where thousands of gallons of lethal chemicals were leaked into the soil, and the high exposure from the chemicals could end up causing nervous system damage (Domus 2012, 4).
