Applying Psychology to Everyday Life: Coping with Stress in College
Stress is any form of change that triggers physical, emotional, mental, and psychological strain among individuals. A stressor is anything that challenges a person’s adaptability in any activity. In my daily life, I am fully aware and conscious of different types of stressors that I am vulnerable to, including the need to cope with the demanding college life. For example, I recognize that class assignment and over-expectations from the instructors and parents could undermine my mental wellbeing if not well managed. The rising demands to meet academic and social expectations at the college could result in frustration, conflict, anxiety, and pressure. Economic worries and the cost of tuition fees constitute another major stressor that I am aware of. With the rising cost of living, lack of adequate financial resources constitutes a significant stressor for a college student. In addition, there is the pressure to secure employment or work after graduating, which could be a considerable stressor for graduating students.
