The Magna Carta Manifesto offers a green light on the present state of liberty. It also indicates how longstanding restraints against tyranny, trial by jury, due law process and the rights of commoners plus the prohibition of torture are being violated (12). Linebaugh (2008) provides a sweeping history of the Magna Carta, which has been claimed to be the source of these protections since the year 1215. In doing so, he has vividly indicated how ancient rights have been consistently ignored because of the ruler’s greed, the aspect of privatization, ambition of empires to seize a state and the greed for power (24).
The author draws on basic sources in constructing and assessing the history of the great charter and its less known counterpart, the forest charter. The forest charter according to the author was established the same time as the great charter for protecting the rights of the poor....
