Government Effective Management of People’s Wants and Needs
Every government in the world has a responsibility to its citizens. However, before anything else, a government is considered as a protector of its citizens. The government must ensure that all citizens within its borders are protected from any internal and external threats. It is impossible for a people to function if and when they are under threats. Thus, governments are there to ensure that people are protected and given the opportunity to grow economically. The second responsibility of the government to its people is being a provider (Slaughter, np). Governments make sure that all the goods and services that beyond the reach of the common citizen are made available. However, it is crucial to distinguish between the needs and wants of the people. So, a need can be defined as that which is necessary, personal, and needed for basic level functioning. A want, on the other hand, is or can defined as the means to fulfill the needs that people have. The two are quite different, and while needs can be satisfied, wants are limitless. Wants cannot be satisfied and continue to recur in life as one moves from one step to another. So, how can a government effectively manage its people’s wants and needs? What can a government do to ensure that its people can access their needs or have the means necessary to help them access their needs and to some extent their wants? Well, this article seeks to make use of China as a case study and the notion that some parts of China lack water to help explain how governments should effectively manage their people’s needs and wants.
The first thing a government needs to do is to distinguish between needs and wants. People in government need to know how to distinguish between the needs and wants of its people. For example, the means of transportation in the modern-day urban life is a need because people need better infrastructure to access their areas of work. Additionally, they need access to clean and piped water. This today are considered as basic needs. Wants, on the other hand, are things people desire to live a better life. There needs to be a distinction in these things. For example, the lack of water in some parts of China needs to be given priority over the construction of a super-highway.
