Consequences of great depression
The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 required that business set aside fair wages and hours and allowed the governing to enforce more regulations if there was non-compliance. There were significant labor legislations and the government under Franklin Roosevelt signaled willingness to enact regulations that protected workers and American citizens. The marketplace was seen as being inadequate to deal with the Great Depression and the business community accepted. Attitudes towards the business community changed that there was increased acceptance about that higher taxes were ‘necessary’.
There was growing distrust of the business community, and consumer protection movements grew and became more powerful. The New Deal increased national government authority, which offered protection to non business interests including organized labor. There was progression of labor rights and Roosevelt even sought to increase the workers’ wages.
Labor rights/goals
As the Great depression had harmed workers, business and farmers, there was increased concern for reforms including labor rights. Roosevelt paved the way for the recognition of unions and the right to collective bargaining that later characterized labor unions.
