The Economic Impact of Immigration on the US Economy
Immigration has a significant impact on the United States economy. Immigration has enhanced economic development and has small to no effects on employment and wages for native-born workers. In the United States, immigrants with high-level degrees usually gravitate towards technical and scientific occupations that do not need high communication (Appelbaum 10). However, this negatively affects the native-born workers within these fields. Immigrant workers significantly help consumers. These individuals lower the prices of services and commodities for the public because they provide cheap labor that enables enterprises to reduce their costs of consumer goods. The paper will focus on emphasizing the positive impacts of immigration while also highlighting various issues concerning immigration on the U.S economy.
Skilled immigrants are essential and beneficial to the American economy. The U.S can import computers instead of importing computer engineers and the money earned can then be taxed and spent in the United States. It is, therefore, more profitable to seek skilled immigrants as they can invent new products and eventually new technologies (Appelbaum 8).
Additionally, immigration creates more jobs and can increase wages for native-born workers. Immigrants fill significant labor gaps in the U.S economy. Vacancies frequently exist even under high unemployment due to native workers not being qualified enough for the jobs available. Also, these native workers may also not want that specific job opportunity due to its low wages and extensive labor (DePillis 2-6).
Immigrants can also complement the existing specialists and technologies in most enterprises. This is applicable to highly skilled immigrants that allow researchers to advance in their fields. Additionally, it also enables low-skilled immigrants to free up native workers towards shifting their professions which are communication intensive (DePillis 2-6). This has led towards the development of collaborations which has led to creation of job opportunities. The economy can accommodate additional immigrant workers due to these new job opportunities especially whereby low-skilled immigrant employees help the highly skilled professionals.
An increase in available workers means that existing business can develop, invest in new equipment and also can lead to the establishment of new firms. Unless the influx of immigrants is rapid and not expected, this mechanism can operate continuously and enables the local economy to absorb and expand the immigrant labor force without necessarily lowering the wages (DePillis 2-6).
