Introduction
Different factors may be evaluated by economists to examine whether the economic performance of a country has deteriorated or improved. These measurements are also critical in reviewing whether the interventions implemented in an economy are facilitating the expected outcomes. The Customer Price Indexes (CPI) evaluates the prices customers pay for a basket of consumer goods and services. Producer Price Indexes (PPI) examines the average changes in selling prices of the domestically produced goods and services. On the other side, Import/Export Price Indexes evaluates price changes for goods and services provided in international trade. Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) offers critical data about expenditure and income based on the socioeconomic characteristics of the consumers. The literature examines what the data and information provided for the different areas show about the economy of the United States.
Consumer Price Index
By September 2019, the CPI for consumers before being unaltered showed an improvement of 0.1% in August. It is important to note that the increase of food and shelter indexes were offset by index reductions recorded in other areas such as energy and cars. Energy and gasoline indexes reduced by 1.4% and 2.4% respectively, while food index raised by 0.1% in September after remaining unchanged for the last three months (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, p.2). The index for all commodities less both energy and food recorded an increase of 0.1% for the month of September while in the last three months the increase was estimated at 0.3%. Some of the indexes which rose in September include medical care, operations, and insurance, while those that declined included new vehicles and trucks.
Since the CPI is used in evaluating the prices, individuals pay for commodities and other services such as medical care. The CPI annual percentage may be effective in evaluating inflation. The all commodities index rose by 1.7% for twelve months ending September; this was the same as for the period ending August. This shows the consumers are paying more some commodities such as food, while the cost of other items has reduced. The balancing of the costs of different commodities has facilitated the rate of inflation to remain constant.
Producer Price Index
Regarding PPI, the index of demand services reduced by approximately 0.2% September after a 0.3% increase in August. The index for trade services, transportation, and warehousing all declined by 0.1%. Additionally, there was a reduction of 0.4% index for the final demand in September, while August has recorded a 0.5% decrease (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The decrease recorded in September is attributed to a reduction in the demand for energy, which was recorded at 2.5%. Furthermore, the reduction of the demand for goods can also be linked to the reduction of...
