The Paris Agreement was an accord bringing together all nations to mitigate climate change. It sought to stabilize global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius and to further lower it to 1.5 degrees Celsius in this century CITATION Shy191 \l 1033 (Shyam Singh Yadav, Robert J Redden, Jerry L Hartfield, 2019). It allowed its parties to establish their own emission reduction targets (NDCs).
On 1st June 2017, President Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the Accord that had committed America to lower GHG emissions by 2025 by at least 25% below their 2005 levels. The US had also pledged 3 billion dollars to the Green Climate Fund to assist poor countries in fighting climate change.
The decision received backlash from scientists, religious organizations, political leaders and environmentalists. From his perspective and in line with his policy of ‘America First’, the decision was unfair to America by not committing China and India to cut their emissions until 2030 CITATION Ros171 \l 1033 (Rose Garden, 2017). It also blocked clean coal mining in West Virginia and Ohio.
