Thus, public sector unions can no longer require employees to pay agency fees, even though these employees can still benefit from collective bargaining agreement. Although some of the fallout still remains to be seen, how do you think unions and their membership in the public sector will be impacted by this?

Unions benefit the rural communities. These places are dominated by land degradation and droughts. This leads to lump-sum amounts of stressful living for the poor households. Problems like child mortality, malnutrition, and aggravating unemployment endangers these economies. Workers and the communities are at higher risks of all these factors and are the most vulnerable groups that benefit from the unions. To have the government build good infrastructure in these places, it requires unified movements initiated by these unions (Schulze & Schroeder, 2017). Unions also empower members of the communities through various benefits to employees that enable them to upgrade the rural settings. For long, unions have fought for factors like better education and equality in the distribution of resources. Also, job training for the rural population, and ensuring accessibility to better healthcare services, unions can turn the situation around.

A research conducted by Manzo and Bruno found how the ruling would influence the unions and their membership. Firstly, this might decrease the state and local government employees’ membership by 8.2 percent that translated to around 726000 members (Semuels, 2018). This will result in a loss of income by the unions. Having a lower revenue reduces the number of representatives a union can have and arbitration cases. Consequently, they will organize fewer members than before. This means reduced payments and benefits for the employees in the public sector.
