Monitoring technology in colleges
Innovation and technological advancement has taken over the world (Quitzow, 127). It is excellent that scientists and other innovators are always thinking of making the world a better place where tasks are simplified. This article explores my views of the new technology that many Universities across the US are using to monitor students; as outlined in Drew Harwell's, Colleges are turning students' phones into surveillance machines, tracking the locations of hundreds of thousands. The technology discussed motivates me and makes me feel like I have a lot to do. I want to leave a legacy in my profession where people debate about my impact when I leave or retire. Technology has raised questions and put people in a dilemma between privacy and what is suitable for the students. I also want to leave a legacy where people discuss my leadership and what to do to improve the standards I set. People can only achieve better improvement through a sober debate.
The technology is intrusive but beneficial at the same time. It is intrusive because it goes beyond the boundaries of the college or university learning premises. There is no point in monitoring what students do during their free time. Sadly, the people that support it think that technology is helping to identify students who might be depressed and helping them (Harwell, 4). Funnily, the same people assert that avoiding the cafeteria is a sign of depression. Most people leave their phones in their rooms while visiting the cafeteria while others love to take away food and eat at their comfort. The primary point on the same, however, is the failure of the college curriculum to notice depression signs in students while in classrooms. Lecturers should teach students to be open and visit a counselor whenever an issue is pressing them. This could be the legit way to go and not tracking where students visit and where they do not and concluding that they are depressed.
The technology is beneficial if used for the right purpose and with a sober intention. It should only monitor students within the classroom as a way of marking class attendance. It makes work easier for instructors instead of manually marking the attendance at least. Some people would say instructors should keep using the traditional manual means to avoid getting into students' privacy, but I think we need to embrace innovations.
