How does this technology make you feel?
This technology makes me feel like other people are running my life. As some correspondents in the article under study have stated, tracking adults is equivalent to crippling. The result is that people do not lead free lives but live in fear of being exposed by the tracking systems. So, one seeks to conform to the system.
However, the entire education system is built on the foundation that students are being taught to be free-thinking individuals. The system is also built on the foundation that students should be taught to be themselves in the way they view the world, develop relationships, and conduct themselves. With a tracking system on their cases, the above becomes a pipe dream as many will live their lives to stick within the set norms, beliefs, and systems. So, from the above, this technology makes me feel like the system seeks to see a controlled group of people instead of people carving out their own paths. It almost feels like a rehearsal for something that is highly likely to happen in the future.
Do you see it being beneficial or intrusive?
I see this type of technology as being extremely intrusive. Tracking student’s performance is within the school’s right, and they should do that for every student. However, when schools extend this tracking to include students’ whereabouts, it infringes on people’s privacy. Tracking class attendance or lateness is also within the right of the school. These pieces of data are key to ensuring students live or honor the school rules. However, it is unfair to expect adults to share details of where they are all the time. Schools are infringing on the students’ privacy, freedom of movement, and by extension, association.
Students are private citizens, and this means they ought to be treated as such. It is true that some are under scholarships. However, this does not give schools the right to treat them as their property with tags that share information on their whereabouts. So, this technology is indeed intrusive and should be limited to information that is directly related to a student’s performance.
