The development of technology over the past years has made it possible for alternative modes of work for employees. More so, the advent of the global coronavirus pandemic showed the possibilities and capabilities of working from home. As such, there has been a recent prevalence of working from home alternatives providing a viable alternative to the conventional office setting (Amar). Consequently, working from home has numerous advantages including improved work-life balance, increased productivity, increased talent pool and reduced commuting that is beneficial to both employers and employees.
Working from home offers a significantly better work-life balance where employees can control their personal and professional lives. By enabling them to control their schedules, employees get to work at their convenience and get adequate time to spend with their families. Furthermore, they can also get the time to pursue personal interests such as hobbies that can improve their physical and mental wellbeing (Ipsen et al.). As such, this balance reduces the overall stress levels that normally affect employees that are constantly working hence improve job satisfaction in the long run. More so, employers can benefit from increased job loyalty and commitment to the organization thus reducing turnover rates. Therefore, working from home offers appropriate benefits to organizations through such work-life balance options they provide.
Apart from that, working from home also increases productivity in employees as compared to their office-bound counterparts. Such workers have the capability to personalize their workspaces to maximize outputs and fine-tune their working hours thus optimizing their efforts. By tailoring works schedules to peak productivity hours, it becomes possible to choose the times where one feels the most productive (Bellmann and Hьbler 426). Such flexibility thus reduces the potential effects of burnout and increases dedication to the organization. More so, the home workspace with reduced distractions improves focus thus ensuring that activities can be efficiently undertaken and completed. Overall, working from home options have significantly better productivity rates for organizations as compared to traditional office ones.
Additionally, working from home also reduces the daily commute that would have been made by the employees if they would be working in their offices. When performed on a large scale, remote work can significantly reduce the environmental impact used to power buildings, personal vehicle and public transportation required by the traditional office structures. With most companies being greatly ware of the challenges caused by climate change, such efforts can significantly reduce pollution caused by greenhouse emissions (Harpaz 76). Therefore, working from home can assist in tackling the climate change issue thus enhancing the environment for future sustainability programs.
