Using information from the video and the quote below, please answer the following: How do you think managers can use this knowledge to motivate their employees? How will you use this knowledge in your own pursuits? Be specific about what tasks, activities, rewards, you would offer and how it would increase motivation, specifically referring to the theories.
There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. Here is what science knows. One: Those 20th century rewards, those motivators we think are a natural part of business, do work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances. Two: Those if-then rewards often destroy creativity. Three: The secret to high performance isn’t rewards and punishments, but that unseen intrinsic drive–the drive to do things for their own sake. The drive to do things cause they matter.

Dan Pink, a former speechwriter, career analyst, and author of the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, reveals some remarkable facts about motivation that have been confirmed in many social science experiments, but aren’t widely recognized. Pink argues that the way we’re motivating people is all wrong, and he proposes a new model to replace traditional incentives.

Dan Pink’s talk is surprising since it shows that motivation can easily lead to increased performance. However, it does not always lead to positive effects. This has been a factor that has often been ignored when it comes to intrinsic and extinct motivators. Businesses rely on several assumptions and protocols based on extrinsic motivators that are not effective in motivating people to accomplish tasks. One of the common motivators involves incentives. The TedTalk was revolutionary since it contradicts some of the common theories, especially those that emphasize rewards. According to the reinforcement theory, behavior can be influenced or reinforced by extrinsic factors such as an incentive or salary pay Recognition and rewards are emphasized. However, Pink disagrees that this applies to all situations (Pink). Pink suggests that rewards lead to a narrow focus, and it becomes hard to solve complex problems that requires more insights. When a task requires rudimentary skills, a higher reward leads to lower performance.
