Zadie Smith's Undestanding of Joy and Helen Rosner's Discussion of Eating
Smith recognizes joy as an admixture of “terror, pain, and delight” and pleasure is more long-term unlike joy. Furthermore, Smith distinguishes between joy and pleasure where there people dread joy ending. The distinction between joy and pleasure is useful to understand Rosner’s focus on the agonies and ecstasies of the Olive Garden. Rosner highlights her delight at visiting various Olive Garden establishments as there is an element of familiarity even as the use of olive is mainly for marketing purposes. Eating is pleasurable and is associated with positive feelings and when people lack joy they are more likely to feel pain.
Rosner enjoys visiting the Olive Garden as she has always gone there, while there is price and convenience in the place, and this is unlike Smith’s idea that people experience delight for only a short period of time. While Smith points out that people tend to experience various negative emotions besides feeling joyous emotions before they experience joy, but Rosner enjoys eating out in a familiar place. Thus, Rosner has a different view that eating is both joyous and pleasurable. Eating is a part of daily life and is one of Smith’s examples of daily pleasures, which give the writer satisfaction.
