The Wings and Engine of Success in Reading and Writing
My journey to reading and writing is an exciting story punctuated by many challenges and success in equal measure. I remember when I was a child my father used to teach me how to read and write by way of drawing. At that time I did not understand what reading and writing meant. I did not even know if it was something that I needed in my life. I viewed it as a waste of time denying me opportunity to play with my childhood friends. I call it the wing that flies and engine that propels me to the right direction because of the positive impacts it has in my life.
I started developing interest in reading during my elementary education. During the closing days, our class teacher would read the names of the best three pupils in our class in the presence of the whole school. They were awarded books and pens after which they shook the hands of all teachers before taking their seats. I watched this with admiration as the rest of us escorted them with well-coordinated rounds of applause.
In her concluding remarks, the teacher said that the three pupils were awarded books and pens for reading and writing during the holiday. She also said that the starling performance of those pupils was because they loved reading and writing. I took the challenge, and I started reading storybooks so that I could also top our class and have a good future that top pupils were promised. It is during this time that I realized the power of reading.
Reading expanded my knowledge and thinking as I got to know many things that I did not know before. It also improved my academic performance, and before I realized it, I was topping my class throughout. Reading also enhanced my communication skills. I practice the words and phrases I read in books in my conversations with friends, classmates and my parents and siblings which improved my comm...
